Federation of Somali Trade Unions (FESTU) is attending the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), which is being held from 5 to 15 July 2022 at UN headquarters in New York.
FESTU, in cooperation with the International Trade Unions Confederation (ITUC), is presenting Somalia’s trade unions and workers position on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Somalia as the Federal Government presents its first Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) on 13 July 2022.
The common position of trade unions affiliated to FESTU to the HLPF is focusing on a decent work agenda, safety of journalists, access to information, gender equality, climate justice and inclusive economic growth. Trade unions are strongly pushing the localisation of SDGs for effective realisation to address Somalia’s multifaced challenges.
As a result of continued advocacy by trade unions, Somalia has made significant progress in its level and quality of engagement and consultation around national development processes. However, unions warn that insufficient resources have been allocated for SDG implementation.
The HLPF is the main UN platform created by the 2030 Agenda; it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
